People probably know this already, but it occurred to me on the way into the interview that interviewers want you to do well.

They want to look at each other when they leave and say “yep, we found the right person” because that makes their lives so much easier. Hiring is a pain in the ass, even if you don’t have to go through a formal search process. I know people who’ve had to restart a search committee because they didn’t get enough qualified candidates/the few people they were willing to hire took other jobs. It sucks! They hated it!

Having two or more excellent candidates is a bit of a problem, and some interviewers might be less interested in you because they already have a favored candidate, but unless they’re weird jerks they still want the interview to go smoothly for everyone (and if they’re weird jerks who want you to crash and burn then obviously you don’t want to work there anyway).
